A railway station in Merseyside has been crowned the best in Britain in the 'World Cup of Stations' competition.

Maghull station, located in Sefton, triumphed over competitors such as King's Lynn in Norfolk and Dorridge in the West Midlands.

Merseyrail attributed Maghull's victory to its dedicated station team and the popularity of The Coffee Carriage, a café that opened in 2024. Rory McLellan, co-owner of The Coffee Carriage, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, "This victory means so much to us. We’re proud to be a small part of what makes Maghull such a special place."

The café has become a community hub for both commuters and locals, enhancing the station's appeal. The competition, organized by the Rail Delivery Group, celebrated UK train stations that provide exceptional services and facilities, including delis, florists, and cafes that enrich local communities.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, expressed his delight at the recognition for Maghull station, highlighting the community spirit and hard work of the station team and volunteers. Merseyrail's deputy managing director, Suzanne Grant, praised the win as a testament to the strong local support during the competition and thanked everyone who voted for Maghull.

Maghull joins a list of past winners, including Wemyss Bay (2023), Stourbridge Junction (2021), and Huddersfield (2019), with over 72,000 votes cast in previous years.
