Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33.
Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 from German club Schalke, making a total of 201 appearances for the Reds and helping the team secure five major trophies during his tenure.
One of his notable contributions came in the 2019 Champions League final, where he provided an assist for Divock Origi's goal in the 2-0 victory against Tottenham in Madrid, leading Liverpool to their sixth European Cup.
However, injuries limited Matip to just nine appearances in Liverpool’s 2019-20 Premier League-winning squad, which ended a 30-year wait for the league title.
He departed Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury that impacted his final year with the club. Matip also earned 27 caps for the Cameroon national team and retires as a free agent, having not signed with another club since leaving Liverpool.
