A competition has been launched for artists to create a landmark Beatles-inspired sculpture outside a venue where the iconic band performed 27 times.
Artists from the Liverpool City Region are encouraged to submit their ideas for a sculpture at Tower Ground in New Brighton, celebrating the town's connection to the Fab Four. The former Tower Ballroom hosted more performances by the Beatles than any venue other than their legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool.
The competition organisers envision a sculpture that stands at least two meters (6.5 feet) tall, designed to be visible from the River Mersey. Across the water, the Beatles statue at Liverpool's Pier Head, created by Andrew Edwards and funded by the Cavern Club, has become one of the city's most popular spots for selfies since its installation in 2015.
Shortlisted applicants will receive grants to help develop their designs for Tower Ground, with funding sourced from local authorities and businesses following Wirral's designation as the 2024 Borough of Culture.
